Convert food into energy
Food passes through the Gastro-Intestinal Track.
The GI includes:
Oral Cavity, Pharynx, Esophagus, Stomach, Small intestine, and Large intestine.
Accessory organs include:
Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, Gallbladder, liver, pancreas.
The process of obtaining that energy is as follows
- Ingestion: Eat food
- Secretion: Saliva secrets enzymes that help "dissolve" part of the food
- Mixing and movement: Stomach takes the "dissolved food and mixes it so to allow food to be digested.
- Digestion
- Absorption In the small intestine Food is being absorbed (only the nutrients)
- Excretion: All the food that is not absorbed is secreted. Goes as waist.
